They’ll Need to Do Demo Work before Building a Bathroom

They’ll Need to Do Demo Work before Building a Bathroom

We are FINALLY adding a bathroom to our cabin! Due to our change in plans it will be where the wood stove and chimney were instead of in an addition. This means we needed to demo those before we could get started on the bathroom. CHIMNEY I started at the top with chimney removal. (If you ever need to do this check out YouTube as there are lots of videos explaining the process.) First, I removed the chimney cap that…

They Will Need to Change Plans

They Will Need to Change Plans

“Is it International Choke a Bureaucrat Day? …Because it sure feels like it” was my first thought when the bureaucrat at the county office told me that if we put a 12×12 addition on our cabin for a bathroom it would no longer qualify as an “accessory dwelling” according to the county zoning ordinance. That would mean we would have to take it down or alter it so it was no longer a dwelling in order to build another primary…

Building a Woodshed with Salvaged Materials

Building a Woodshed with Salvaged Materials

Why we wanted to build a woodshed: We want to cut from our land all of the firewood we burn in our woodstove, which is our only heat source. This year, that wasn’t a problem as we needed to cut down many trees to clear a right of way for our power line. We did have a problem of not having a place to put the wood once it was cut, so I decided we needed a woodshed. And since…

They Will Get a Refrigerator

They Will Get a Refrigerator

We’ve been asked two questions a lot: “How’s the electricity?” and “What’s changed now that you have electricity?”Before we got electricity, the winter darkness signaled bedtime and we went to bed a lot earlier than we normally would. These days, one of the things we’ve really enjoyed about the electricity is being able to stay up later, see what we’re doing, and feel less tired in the evenings. It’s amazing how much energy I get from having lights on in…

They Will GET Electricity

They Will GET Electricity

The electricians arrived and one of the first comments was, “Nice trench.” The electrician had asked for a 27” deep trench to run the wire in and because we had someone excavate it, it was much bigger than needed.  As the electrician was laying the 100 f eet of line to connect the meter to our cabin, he delightedly exclaimed, “I’ve never gotten to walk in the trench before!” The two electricians were here most of the day and, my…

They Will Really Really Want Electricity

They Will Really Really Want Electricity

If I look out my front door, a little to the left of the sauna, I can see a tiny red light shining from the newly installed meter. Electricity is about 100 feet away from our house and the anticipation is killing me! It has been about 8.5 months since we’ve lived with electricity and indoor plumbing and I cannot tell you how jump-out-of-my-skin excited I am to have one of those modern-day conveniences back!

They’re Going to Want a New Front Door (with a Window)

They’re Going to Want a New Front Door (with a Window)

Yesterday my parents came to help install a new front door and it was quite an ordeal. It seemed as though everything that could go wrong did. To summarize, my Dad had said we should be able to get it done by noon and after 3 trips to the store we had it pretty much finished by 8:30pm. Clearly you don’t want me to write a how to on replacing a door so lets leave that to Tom Silva and…

One of Them Will Become an Appliance Repairman

One of Them Will Become an Appliance Repairman

In order to put an end to a few weeks of cooking on a camping stove, after getting propane hooked up to the stove that came with our cabin (which was an adventure in itself) we fired up the stove which came with the cabin when we purchased it. It seemed to work, but left soot on the bottom of our pots and pans. a couple days later we upon using the oven set off our carbon monoxide detector. By…

They’re Going to Want Propane to Run Their Stove

They’re Going to Want Propane to Run Their Stove

After doing some research we decided that we wanted to get two 100 lb. tanks for propane that we could bring to town to get filled when we want rather than having a large tank and needed to deal with deliveries. We ordered some from U-Haul and had them delivered, we ordered a regulator that would automatically switch between tanks when one was empty and hoses from Amazon. The U-Haul delivery went just fine, but the Amazon delivery didn’t come…
