They’re Going to Have the First of Many Adventures

They’re Going to Have the First of Many Adventures

Less than a week after closing on our cabin and months before moving in or insuring it, a huge windstorm blew through. We are talking our-house-in-town-being-without-electricity-for-a-whole-week-in-the-aftermath-of-this-storm huge. After the obstacle course of debris on my way to work, working all day (my office is conveniently located in one of only two neighborhoods in the area that had power that day) and going out for dinner since we didn’t have a working refrigerator or stove we went to go check out…

They’ll Want an Ice Pack to Go with It

We’ve had many encounters with bugs during our time at the cabin but this story took place at the beginning, months before we moved in. I went through the pictures to jog my memory and wow, I had forgotten how bad it was! Here it is: a bug story. It was a beautiful summer Saturday at the cabin. We had just closed on the property and were reveling in the start of a new adventure by spending a day at…

They Will GET Electricity

They Will GET Electricity

The electricians arrived and one of the first comments was, “Nice trench.” The electrician had asked for a 27” deep trench to run the wire in and because we had someone excavate it, it was much bigger than needed.  As the electrician was laying the 100 f eet of line to connect the meter to our cabin, he delightedly exclaimed, “I’ve never gotten to walk in the trench before!” The two electricians were here most of the day and, my…

They Will Really Really Want Electricity

They Will Really Really Want Electricity

If I look out my front door, a little to the left of the sauna, I can see a tiny red light shining from the newly installed meter. Electricity is about 100 feet away from our house and the anticipation is killing me! It has been about 8.5 months since we’ve lived with electricity and indoor plumbing and I cannot tell you how jump-out-of-my-skin excited I am to have one of those modern-day conveniences back!

They’re Going to Want a New Front Door (with a Window)

They’re Going to Want a New Front Door (with a Window)

Yesterday my parents came to help install a new front door and it was quite an ordeal. It seemed as though everything that could go wrong did. To summarize my Dad had said we should be able to get it done by noon and after 3 trips to the store we had it pretty much finished by 8:30. Clearly you don’t want me to write a how to on replacing a door so lets leave that to Tom Silva and…

One of Them Will Become an Appliance Repairman

One of Them Will Become an Appliance Repairman

In order to put an end to a few weeks of cooking on a camping stove, after getting propane hooked up to the stove that came with our cabin (which was an adventure in itself) we fired up the stove which came with the cabin when we purchased it. It seemed to work, but left soot on the bottom of our pots and pans. a couple days later we upon using the oven set off our carbon monoxide detector. By…

They’re Going to Ask for a Plow Truck

They’re Going to Ask for a Plow Truck

We have quite the driveway – it is a quarter mile long and that is way too long to shovel. It is also cost prohibitive to pay someone to plow it every time it snows. Because of this, we wanted to buy a plow truck or tractor to plow the snow ourselves.     We considered several ways to clear our driveway including a plow truck than we never use on the roads, A nice plow truck, a tractor with a snow…

They’re Going to Want Propane to Run Their Stove

They’re Going to Want Propane to Run Their Stove

After doing some research we decided that we wanted to get two 100 lb. tanks for propane that we could bring to town to get filled when we want rather than having a large tank and needed to deal with deliveries. We ordered some from U-Haul and had them delivered, we ordered a regulator that would automatically switch between tanks when one was empty and hoses from Amazon. The U-Haul delivery went just fine, but the amazon delivery didn’t come…

They’re Going to Sell Their House and Move in (in the Middle of the Cold Minnesota Winter)

They’re Going to Sell Their House and Move in (in the Middle of the Cold Minnesota Winter)

We bought our cabin in July with hopes of selling our house and moving into it in the early fall with time to get electricity in before the ground froze. This ended up being a case of the Lord’s timing not being our timing and He worked it out that our house would sell in the middle of winter. The closing wasn’t until mid-January, but due to some close friends of ours getting married the first weekend of January and…
